De Haar Castle: At an hour drive from our hometown, the beautiful De Haar Castle lights up, which I had seen passing by a few times while I was searching for favorite photo spots around the city of Utrecht. At eight o'clock in the morning, we drove to the Haar castle which opens its gardens to the public at 9 o'clock and the castle itself opens at 11:00 in this way. most tourists would not arrive until 11:00 if the castle also opened and we could free walking around and take some pics. We parked for 6 euros in the parking lot and walked inside where we had to pay another 6 euros for the gardens, if you also want to visit the castle there are another 11 euros to pay, it is not cheap but I must say the castle is very well maintained and the gardens are beautifully laid out in the spring and summer. When we were there all the roses were nicely in bloom and you could see that a lot of attention is paid to this.
We have not been inside because our interest is not really there but on pictures, it looked well maintained. The castle is really a fairy-tale castle. It is so beautiful and grand and medieval that I can hardly believe that it is in the Netherlands and not in France. Nobody knows when castle de Haar was built exactly, but it was probably the thirteenth or fourteenth century. Back then it wasn't much more than a residential tower. From 1482 the castle was systematically expanded and strengthened to cope with attacks and weather conditions. The castle fell into disrepair from the eighteenth century until there was no more than a ruin at the end of the nineteenth century. When baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar inherited the ruin in 1890, he decided to restore the castle with the fortune of his wife Baroness Hélène de Rothschild to a castle. Well-known architect Pierre Cuypers was called in to reform the whole together with his son Joseph. No matter how grand and comfortable the castle is, it was never more than a holiday home for the couple who wanted to welcome and entertain guests in the castle in the month of September. This family tradition continued until 2005, with the family living in the châtelet (instead of the castle) in September, which was originally used as a staff room.
The castle is impressive in itself, but together with the castle garden, it is nothing short of spectacular: if you want to see the entire garden you can walk for an hour and a half!
In 1895, landscape architect Hendrik Copijn turned the lands into an English landscape park, with French gardens immediately surrounding the castle. The complex has a beautiful pond and even a deer park! Whether you visit Kasteel de Haar for the park, the wonderful history, the exhibitions, the gardens, the deer or to get married, you will find yourself in a different world. Behind every door, every detail, every flower from the colorful gardens, there is a story. About different times, different cultures, different figures. De Haar is the largest castle in the Netherlands that was once privately owned by the van Zuylen family and where its descendants still reside annually. The international jet set from the last century, with its exuberant lifestyle, also regularly visited the castle. From Coco Chanel to Roger Moore, they left their mark in the luxurious rooms of the most lavish place in Utrecht.
Utrecht: Spending an afternoon strolling and shopping in the old city center of Utrecht after having spent two hours in the gardens of the Haar castle. We felt like hungry and need to eat something and drove in fifteen minutes to the shopping center of Utrecht. We ordered a bowl of noodles worked their way in to get some energy to explore the city of Utrecht on this beautiful summer day. We walked through the old city center to the canals where we briefly absorbed the hustle and bustle of the city on the side of the water after which we walked towards the Dom tower the iconic sight of Utrecht. I think that all old churches and buildings are always in the scaffolding so this time too. After a tour around the of Domtoren, we visited the garden next to the church which is very photogenic.
We sat here for half an hour and sauntered back through the city towards the shopping center, we stopped for a cup of coffee it was a very hot and busy day in the city and perfect for a day on the water which many people used to do. We saw canoes come from everywhere and the craziest boats, surfboards with hammocks you name it. Seeing Utrecht really takes a while and you need more time for photographing as a aftrenoon. Next time we will visit again and relax at night by the canals. There are a lot of nice eating tents in Utrecht, al kind of food can be found there. The city of Utrecht was founded , long ago as a Roman settlement on the Rhine river. Utrecht has a rich history and a wealth of historical and cultural attractions such as churches, monuments, and castles. You can stroll along the many old canals, or across the various markets. You will also find various museums in Utrecht, various active attractions and countless nice little restaurants. In short, Utrecht has something for everyone!
Veluwe: Picnic on the Veluwe and walking through the Kootwijker dunes.
On a warm summer afternoon it was really hot this year in June, we drove to the Veluwe for a visit to family. Along the way we stopped the car at the parking spot of the Kootwijker Duinen at Radio Kootwijk for a walk through the largest sand drift in Europe. Kootwijkerzand is the largest active sand drift in Europe, caused by overgrazing and the fencing off of heathland pigs in the distant past. You will find sand dunes and bizarre trees with open roots and wild game. Super beautiful! In the heart of the Veluwe, the trees of the Netherlands' largest forest area suddenly make way for a large open area of heathland and sand drifts: the Kootwijkerzand. With an area of 700 hectares, Kootwijkerzand is the largest active sand drift in Western Europe.Desert of the NetherlandsRolling, gleaming white hills as far as the eye can see, traces of red deer and wild boar run in the sand, birds of prey fly against the blue sky. In the summer the temperature, just above the sand, can rise to no less than fifty degrees Celsius, in the evening it can fall below freezing. You understand, this is not an area where every plant or animal can survive. In the surrounding forests, red deer and wild boar thrive, and small mammals such as rabbit, badger, fox, roe deer and marten. Who looks up certainly sees a hawk, buzzard, raven or black woodpecker. Scattered here and there are flying pines spontaneously raised from the sand. Because they have the space, branches and trunks are curved in the most unlikely curves. In this rugged sandy area without paths and roads you can walk wherever you want.Kootwijkerzand lookout tower From the Kootwijkerzand lookout tower you have a fantastic view of the Veluwe. This steel tower replaces an 8 meter high wooden specimen from 1999, which had to be demolished due to wood rot. The 13.5 meter high lookout tower stands on the largest sand drift in Western Europe. It is freely accessible between sunrise and sunset.
Kastelen, Zandduinen en de mooie stad Utrecht, een weekend rond touren rond de stad Utrecht
Kasteel de Haar: Op een uur rijden van onze woonplaats licht het mooie kasteel de Haar, welke ik al een paar keer voorbij had zien komen terwijl ik aan het zoeken was voor favoriete fotospots rond de stad Utrecht. We reden om acht uur in de ochtend in een uurtje tijd naar kasteel de Haar welke haar tuinen opent voor publiek om 9 uur en het kasteel zelf opent om 11:00 op deze manier konden we mooi op ons gemakt rond lopen door de tuinen omdat de meeste toeristen pas om 11:00 zouden komen als het kasteel ook opent. We parkeerden voor 6 euro op het parkeer terein en liepen naar binnen waar we nog eens 6 euro voor de tuinen moesten betalen, als je ook het kasteel binnen wil bezoeken komt er nog 11 euro bij ,het is niet goedkoop maar ik moet zeggen het kasteel is wel heel goed onderhouden en de tuinen zijn in de Lente en zomer bijzonder mooi aangelegd. Toen wij er waren stonden alle rozen mooi in bloei en je kon zien dat hier veel aandacht aan besteed word. Binnen zijn we niet geweest omdat daar onze interesse niet echt ligt maar op foto`s zag dit er ook goed onderhouden uit. Het kasteel is echt een sprookjesachtig kasteel. Het is zó mooi en groots en middeleeuws dat ik bijna niet kan geloven dat dit in Nederland staat en niet in Frankrijk.
Wanneer Kasteel de Haar precies gebouwd is weet niemand, maar de waarschijnlijk is dit de dertiende of veertiende eeuw geweest. Toen was het overigens nog niet veel meer dan een woontoren. Vanaf 1482 werd het kasteel stelselmatig uitgebreid en verstevigd om aanvallen en weersomstandigheden het hoofd te bieden. Vanaf de achttiende eeuw raakte het kasteel in verval, totdat er aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw niet meer dan een ruïne stond.
Toen baron Étienne van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar de ruïne in 1890 erfde, besloot hij het kasteel met het fortuin van zijn vrouw barones Hélène de Rothschild te restaureren tot een kasteel. Bekende architect Pierre Cuypers werd ingeschakeld om het geheel samen met zoon Joseph te hervormen. Hoe groots en comfortabel het kasteel ook is het was nooit meer dan een vakantiehuisje voor het koppel, dat in de september-maand gasten wilde ontvangen en vermaken in het kasteel. Deze familietraditie werd voortgezet tot in 2005, waarbij de familie in de maand september in het châtelet woonde (in plaats van het kasteel), dat oorspronkelijk als personeelsruimte gebruikt werd.
Het kasteel is op zichzelf al indrukwekkend, maar samen met de kasteeltuin is het niets minder dan spectaculair: als je de hele tuin wilt zien kun je wel anderhalf uur wandelen! Tuinarchitect Hendrik Copijn maakte in 1895 van de landerijen een Engels landschapspark, met Franse tuinen direct rondom het kasteel. Het complex heeft een prachtige vijver en zelfs een hertenpark!
Of je Kasteel de Haar nu bezoekt om het park, de wonderlijke geschiedenis, de tentoonstellingen, de tuinen, de hertjes of om te trouwen, je waant je even in een andere wereld. Achter elke deur, elk detail, elke bloem uit de kleurrijke tuinen, schuilt wel een verhaal. Over andere tijden, andere culturen, andere figuren. De Haar is het grootste kasteel van Nederland, dat ooit privébezit was van de familie van Zuylen en waar haar nazaten nog steeds jaarlijks verblijven. Ook de internationale jetset uit de vorige eeuw, met haar uitbundige levensstijl, bezocht met regelmaat het kasteel. Van Coco Chanel tot Roger Moore, zij lieten hun sporen na in de luxueuze kamers van de meest weelderige plek die Utrecht rijk is.
Een middagje rond slenteren en shopping in de oude binnenstad van Utrecht na twee uur rond geslentert te hebben in de tuinen van kasteel de Haar kregen we trek in iets te eten en reden we in een kwartiertje naar het winkelcentrum van Utrecht Hoog catharijne waar we bij Asia food een bak noodlles naar binnen werkten om zo wat op energie te komen om de stad Utrecht te verkennen op deze mooie zomerdag.We liepen door de oude binnenstad naar de grachten waar we even de drukte van de stad in ons opnamen aan de kant van het water waarna we richting de Dom liepen. Volgens mij staan alle oude kerken en gebouwen altijd in de steiger zo ook deze keer. Na een rondje Domtoren bezochten we nog de tuin naast de kerk welke erg fotogeniek is. We zaten hier een half uurtje en slenterden terug door de stad richting het winkelt centrum, we stopten nog even voor een bakje koffie het was erg warm en druk in de stad perfect voor een dag op het water waar ook veel mensen van gebruik maakten we zagen overal kano`s vandaan komen en de gekste bootjes surf planken met hangmatten noem maar op. Utrecht echt zien is een middag te kost voor ik moet hier binnenkort nog eens een weekendje naar toe om zo de grachten op de mooie zomer avonden te kunnen fotograferen.Er zijn enorm veel leuke eet tentjes in Utrecht je kan het zo gek niet bedenken of het is er wel te vinden.
De stad Utrecht is lang, lang geleden ontstaan als Romeinse nederzetting aan de Rijn. Utrecht heeft dan ook een rijke geschiedenis en een schat aan historische en culturele bezienswaardigheden, zoals kerken, monumenten en kastelen. Je kunt er heerlijk slenteren langs de vele oude grachtjes, of over de verschillende markten. Ook vind je in Utrecht verschillende musea, diverse actieve attracties en ontelbare leuke kleine restaurantjes. Kortom, Utrecht heeft voor ieder wat wils!
Picknick op de Veluwe en wandelen door de Kootwijker duinen.
Op een warme zomer middag het was echt snikheet reden we richting de Veluwe voor een bezoek aan familie. Onderweg stopten we de autop op de parkeerplek van de Kootwijker Duinen bij Radio Kootwijk voor een wandeling door de grootste zand verstuiving van Europa. Kootwijkerzand is de grootste actieve zandverstuiving van Europa, ontstaan door overbegrazing en het afplaggen van heideplaggen, in een ver verleden. Je vindt er zandduinen en bizarre bomen met opengewaaide wortels en loslopend wild. Super mooi! In het hart van de Veluwe maken de bomen van Nederlands grootste bosgebied opeens plaats voor een groot open gebied van heidevelden en zandverstuivingen: het Kootwijkerzand. Met een oppervlakte van 700 hectare is het Kootwijkerzand de grootste actieve zandverstuiving van West-Europa.
Woestijn van Nederland Glooiende, blinkend witte heuvels zover het oog reikt, in het zand lopen sporen van edelherten en wilde zwijnen, tegen de blauwe lucht vliegen roofvogels. ’s Zomers kan de temperatuur, vlak boven het zand, oplopen tot maar liefst vijftig graden Celsius, ´s avonds kan het teruglopen tot onder het vriespunt. U begrijpt, dit is niet een gebied waar elke plant of elk dier zomaar kan overleven. In de omringende bossen gedijen edelherten en wilde zwijnen goed, en kleine zoogdieren zoals konijn, das, vos, ree en boommarter. Wie omhoog kijkt ziet vast en zeker een havik, buizerd, raaf of zwarte specht. Her en der verspreid staan vliegdennen, spontaan uit het zand omhooggekomen. Doordat ze de ruimte hebben, zijn takken en stammen in de meest onwaarschijnlijke bochten gekromd. In dit ruige zandgebied zonder paden en wegen mag u wandelen waar u wilt.
Uitkijktoren Kootwijkerzand Vanaf de uitkijktoren op het Kootwijkerzand heb je een fantastisch uitzicht over de Veluwe. Deze stalen toren vervangt een 8 meter hoge houten exemplaar uit 1999, dat in verband met houtrot gesloopt moest worden. De 13,5 meter hoge uitkijktoren staat op de grootste zandverstuiving van West-Europa. Tussen zonsopkomst en -ondergang is hij vrij toegankelijk.
