Wonder how to hike to the iconic Schäfler ridge in Appenzell? Below is a hiking guide filled with practical information so you can set off on an adventurous, fun day trip! The Schäfler Hut is up above the incredible Schäfler Ridge. The Schäfler Ridge is one of the most dramatic sections of the Alpstein region in Appenzellerland.
There are quite a few ways to get up to the Schäfler mountain ridge:
You can take the cable car up from Wasserauen to Ebenalp and then hike up from there.
Walk up from Wasserauen to Seealpsee, then up to Ebenalp and finally to Schäfler. Going through Ebenalp makes the trail much shorter and drastically decreases the exposure of the hike.
Walk from Wasserauen to Seelapsee and then to Schäfler.

Time: 3 hours
The hike in the forest is quite difficult steep and slippy, you have to bring enough water it can be very hot in summer. The total hiking time from Wasserauen to Schäfler Hut will be about three hours but depends a lot on your pace up 1200m of incline.
After a 1,5-hour hike, you will come to the fist Berggasthaus
The Ascher Cliff restaurant is famous due to its incredibly scenic position and was featured in National Geographic, which instantly made it a favorite location for tourists. We chilled out at the restaurant for half an hour enjoying a coffee with apfelstrudel amongst other hikers, and trail runners.
It is of note to mention that you can take the cable car up to Ebenalp and then walk the short way down to Ascher Cliff Restaurant if you aren’t intending to do much hiking but still want to enjoy this iconic restaurant location.
Once you finish coffee at the Ascher Cliff Restaurant, you can head up the stairs towards the church and the caves.
Beyond the church are some caves you need to walk through to make it to Ebenalp. Inside the caves are lights showing you points of interest with placards explaining important parts about the caves, such as the fact that bears used to live inside.
After passing through the caves, you are just about at the Ebenalp viewpoint. However, you still need a little more incline to make it up to Ebenalp, which sits at 1,644m above sea level. At the viewpoint, you will find a restaurant and several small buildings selling souvenirs. We took this chance to sit down on the benches, take the whole scene in and look at the cows with their huge bells, it's also a popular place for paragliding.
From Ebenalp to Schäfler the journey is just under three kilometers with a couple of hundred meters of incline. The route gives you several great views along the way on either side of the trail before sending you into a series of switchbacks set to test out your legs on what should be the final moments of incline for the day.
From Ebenalp to Schäfler Hut you can expect to take just under an hour to complete the hike. Once you reach the hut you may want to stop for a drink or a snack before venturing on for a few more moments to the viewpoint, which is one of the best spots in the Alpstein region.
The first viewpoint is just above the Schäfler Ridge and is only 1-minuet up the hill from the Schäfler Hut. Here you can get great views of Schäfler Ridge.
We had decided to visit the Schäfler Ridge for the golden hour and stay for sunset. Overnight we stay in the Schäfler Hut. If you plan to do sunrise or sunset at Schäfler Ridge, I suggest staying in one of these two huts, and the best one to stay at is Schäfler hut but you will need to book in advance, especially if it is a weekend.
The golden hour had arrived so we ventured down from the top viewpoint and began to wander along the path on Schäfler Ridge capturing other hikers and exploring the different angles as the light continued to change.
As the peak moment of the sunset came, we decided to head up onto the spine of Schäfler, which is off the path. Be careful if you do this as there is a drop-off on both sides but particularly to the right.
SCHÄFLER HUT & RIDGE HIKE DETAILS
Hike Distance: The hike distance from Wasserauen to Schäfler Hut is 7.5km.
Hike Duration: The total hiking time from Wasserauen to Schäfler Hut will be about three hours
Hike Difficulty: The hike is a red and white marked trail. The incline will get a lot of people but there are no dangerous drop-offs or moments of high exposure if you walk not too fast it's not tho difficult
GETTING TO WASSERAUEN
Wasserauen is the start point for the Schäfler Hut hike and is easily accessible by train or car. Wasserauen is in the northeast of Switzerland near the Liechtenstein border.
TRAILHEAD INSTRUCTIONS FOR SCHÄFLER HUT HIKE
The Schäfler Hut hike begins in Wasserauen. There is a train station directly at the foot of the hike where you will find the cable car if you decide not to hike the whole way and take the cable car to Ebenalp. When you arrive at Wasserauen, you will find yourself in a parking lot where you can park for 3chf a day. From the Alpen Rose hotel, walk away to the Seealpsee direction and away from the parking lot. The trail is on the left side next to a wooden house and heads directly up into the forest.
Schäfler Guesthouse – This is the ultimate place to stay for sunrise and sunset. The Schäfler ridgeline is insanely beautiful. I highly recommend checking it out! It costs 45 CHF to stay in the dormitories, and it costs 70 CHF per person in their single or double rooms.
Hotels nearby if the Schafler is full
The Hotel Frohe Aussicht hotel enjoys a quiet location in Schwende in the Alpstein Hiking Area. It offers free WiFi, fine regional cuisine, and a sauna.
You can enjoy seasonal, fish, games and mushroom dishes, and fine wines from the hotel's well-stocked cellar. During summer, you can dine outside on the terrace.
It takes you only a 10-minute drive or a 20-minute bike ride to reach Appenzell from Schwede. The station of the Appenzellerbahn is only 200 m away from the Hotel Hotel Frohe Aussicht.
Hiken naar de Schafler hut in de Alpstein regio Zwitserland

De Schäfler is een van de meest mooie ruige dramatische delen van de Alpstein regio in het Appenzellerland .
Ebenalp is zo'n prachtige en ondergewaardeerde bestemming.
Er zijn 3 verschillende manieren om de Schäfler bergkam te bereiken:
1. U kunt de kabelbaan van Wasserauen naar Ebenalp nemen en vanaf daar omhoog wandelen.
2. Loop vanaf Wasserauen omhoog naar Seealpsee , dan omhoog door het bos naar Ebenalp en tenslotte naar Schäfler . ( route 8 en via Ascher en wildkirchi naar Ebenalp dit is korter als er omheen)
3. Loop van Wasserauen naar Seelapsee en dan langs het meer omhoog naar Schäfler .

Einde wandeling: Schäfler Hutte

De wandeling door het bos vanaf Alpsee route 8 is pittig ,neem voldoende water meen het kan in de zomer erg warm zijn. Na 1,5 uur wandelen en klimmen kom je bij het eerste Berggasthaus
Het restaurant Ascher is beroemd vanwege zijn ongelooflijk schilderachtige ligging en was te zien in National Geographic, waardoor het meteen een favoriete locatie voor toeristen was.
We chillen hier een half uur in het restaurant onder het genot van een kopje koffie en appelstrudel tussen andere wandelaars en trailrunners.
Je kan ook de kabelbaan naar Ebenalp nemen en vervolgens 20 min naar beneden naar Ascher lopen als je niet van plan bent veel te wandelen, maar toch wilt genieten van deze iconische locatie.
Na de koffie in het Ascher Cliff Restaurant, neem je het pad naar de kerk en de grotten.
Voorbij de kerk zijn enkele grotten waar je doorheen moet lopen om Ebenalp te bereiken .
Binnen in de grotten zijn lichten die je de bezienswaardigheden laten zien met borden die belangrijke delen over de grotten uitleggen, zoals het feit dat er vroeger beren leefden.
Nadat u door de grotten bent gegaan, bent u zo ongeveer bij het uitzichtpunt Ebenalp .Bij het uitkijkpunt vind je een restaurant en verschillende kleine gebouwen die souvenirs verkopen. We namen deze kans om op de banken te gaan zitten, het hele tafereel in ons op te nemen en naar de koeien met hun enorme bellen te luisteren de muziek van de alpen, het is ook een populaire plek om te paragliden.
Van Ebenalp naar Schäfler is de reis iets minder dan drie kilometer met een paar honderd meter stijging. De route geeft je onderweg verschillende geweldige uitzichten aan weerszijden van het pad voordat je een reeks haarspeldbochten ingaat om je benen nog een keer te testen wat de laatste loodjes van de dag zouden moeten zijn.
Van Ebenalp naar Schäfler Hut kun je verwachten dat je iets minder dan een uur nodig hebt om de wandeling te voltooien. Zodra we de hut bereikt stoppen we voor een drankje en lunch voordat we inchecken in onze kamer. Welke basic is maar met een geweldig uitzicht en zulke fijne bedden.
Het eerste uitzichtpunt is net boven de Schäfler Ridge en slechts 1 minuut van de heuvel van de Schäfler Hut. Hier heb je een geweldig uitzicht op de Schäfler-bergkam .
Als je van plan bent om zonsopgang of zonsondergang te doen op Schäfler Ridge, raad ik aan om in een van deze twee hutten te verblijven, en de beste om te verblijven is de Schäfler- hut, maar je moet van tevoren reserveren, vooral in het weekend is het snel vol. We hadden 3 maanden van te voren gereserveerd via de telefoon.
Het gouden uur was aangebroken, dus waagden we ons naar beneden vanaf het hoogste gezichtspunt en begonnen langs het pad over Schäfler Ridge te wandelenen en de verschillende hoeken te verkennen terwijl het licht bleef veranderen.
Toen het hoogtepunt van de zonsondergang aanbrak, besloten we om de ruggengraat van Schäfler op te gaan , die van het pad af ligt. Wees voorzichtig als je dit doet, want er is een drop-off aan beide kanten, maar vooral aan de rechterkant en draag goede schoenen.

Wasserauen is het startpunt voor de Schäfler Hut-wandeling en is gemakkelijk bereikbaar per trein of auto. Wasserauen ligt in het noordoosten van Zwitserland, vlakbij de grens met Liechtenstein.
TRAILHEAD INSTRUCTIES VOOR SCHÄFLER HUT WANDELING
De Schäfler Huttenwandeling begint in Wasserauen . Er is een treinstation direct aan de voet van de wandeling waar u de kabelbaan vindt als u besluit niet de hele weg te wandelen en de kabelbaan naar Ebenalp te nemen . Wanneer u aankomt in Wasserauen , bevindt u zich op een parkeerplaats waar u voor 3chf per dag kunt parkeren. Loop vanaf het Alpen Rose hotel de weg naar Seealpsee en weg van de parkeerplaats. Het pad ligt aan de linkerkant naast een houten huis en gaat direct het bos in.
Schäfler Guesthouse - Dit is de ultieme plek om te verblijven voor zonsopgang en zonsondergang. De bergkam van Schäfler is waanzinnig mooi. Ik raad het ten zeerste aan om het te bekijken! Het kost 45 CHF om in de slaapzalen te verblijven, en het kost 70 CHF per persoon in hun een- of tweepersoonskamers.
