We start our trip with a flight from Amsterdam via Istanbul to Phuket, we liked to fly via Istanbul because it is considerably cheaper than the other airports to stopover and I don't like the airplanes where you have to pay for each suitcase on a long flight you bring. Fortunately, they are not that difficult with Turkish airlines and the service at the airport and on the plane is great. It took some time to get used to the immense huge new airport in Istanbul
Exactly 1 January we fly somewhere over the middle east and the pilot makes a call to let us know that we just fly in the new year and flying somewhere above Afghanistan and then I fall asleep and just before we landed in Phuket I wake up with the sun shining through the windows and the smell of sandwiches and coffee. Landed in Phuket, we pick up our rental car and drive to Khao Lak in 1.5 hours where we check-in at the beautiful resort The Haven Khao Lak.
We checked in and got a poolside room on the first floor, so you just could dive in from the bed to the pool, a great start in the new year. After a refreshing dip, we take a power nap and in the afternoon we eat some food in the hotel restaurant where I got my first Thai curry this holiday. In the afternoon we decided to create some content with the idea of Christmas and New Year on a white beach Mabey it sells in the future on stock photography websites you never know, I try to combine traveling with stock photography so at the end we make some money with traveling and save us some money for our next trip.
In the evening we sat down for dinner in buffet form with an extensive BBQ. The other morning, after breakfast, we grabbed a bicycle in front of the hotel and visited a temple nearby, it was fair cycling on the quiet farmers' roads with beautiful tall palm trees on both sides. Back away we stopped somewhere along the road were in the open air there were a few beds where they offered a massage. We were pampered here for a few hours with a great sea view. In the afternoon we did nothing at all at the hotel and enjoyed a great sunset with a beer in hand at the pool.
Khao Sok
The other morning we checked out and after breakfast, we drove towards Khao Sok where we parked our car at the Chelan pier where the boat also left for Panvaree resort. We bought a ticket for the entrance to the national park and a parking ticket and left for the Panvaree resort. It was about an hour-long road to the resort and never bored us a minute, travelers who first excited for a place in front of the boat sit moved anyway backward because of they get very wet. Panvaree resort is one of the most luxurious resorts in Khao Sok usually you buy a package including breakfast, lunch and dinner, and activities such as Sunrise, Sunset, hike in the jungle, kayaking, etc.
We were assigned a bungalow somewhere in the middle, on 1 plateau there is a bungalow shared with the neighbors, it can sometimes be noisy, if necessary, children could also sleep on the top floor. During the day there is no power in the room so make sure you charge everything. There is possibly 1 socket of the impeller available for your phone. The atmosphere at the resort was pleasantly no stressful and the food was local Thai without too much fuss and the taste was good and the quantity sufficient. In the evening we did a cruise in the longtail boat with other guests and the next morning a Sunrise and during the day we relaxed at the bungalow and took off and then a dip in the crystal clear water between the fish or we took the kayak to float around. Because we needed a bit more time to take pictures, we rented a longtail boat for us only in the afternoon. The last morning we had our breakfast delivered to our room for a small fee, which we enjoyed with a paradise view. Phangnga Bay
From Khao Sok, we drove in 2 hours to Phangnga where we stayed at a great viewpoint Sametnagshe. The view here is priceless, we had a bamboo cabin in the mountains overlooking dozens of islands and the lagoon of Phangan Bay. The resort is still in construction and added a pool and a new restaurant with more luxurious bungalows recently. You can also visit the resort only for the viewpoint you park below and for a small fee, you will be driven upstairs where you can enjoy the restaurant and viewpoint.
From the resort, it is a 5-minute drive to the harbor where we chartered a local fisherman to cruise around the many Island and Panyee village a village with sea gypsies built on stilts now it mainly serves as a place with many restaurants little to see of the local life of the past. We were the first to visit James Bond Island known for its James Bond movie. Fortunately, we were early and so able to take some pictures here, after us boats full of tourists from Phuket came, all following the same route, so it can be very busy in some places, so it is better to take a tour with a local person so that you do not end up in the mass tourism stream. We usually try to govern as and early in the morning to leave. On Panyee Island we still withdraw some money because there is no money to pin around the resort nearby. The next day we did not do much and chilled by the pool. Besides the great view and Phangnga Bay, there is not much to do. 3 nights is more than enough if you want to stay here.
Chumpon
Because we have family in Chumphon, we decided to visit this province. Chumphon is a province that is normally only visited on transit to the island of Khao Sok, Phangnga, and Koh Samui which is a great pity. Chumphon has miles of white sand beaches with palm trees. Because tourism is still in the child's chairs here or most tourists completely skip this province, you will see some plastic on the beaches, it seems that it has not yet dawned that plastic does not disappear from the beaches and the sea by itself. We visited Chumpon a local fishing village where you can stay with fishermen families here we see so much plastic lay on the beaches that I felt sorry for an old e man attempting to do everything to collect bumps to burn the filthy beaches littered with plastics destroy a chance of tourism here, the government should be able to provide more information to the local people to protect their beaches and don't buy so many sweet drinks on the road and throw them on the beach. We stayed in Tusita Wellness resort a spacious resort with a beautiful swimming pool and a professional spa where you can get all kinds of massages. The beach in front of the resort was clean and the rooms are built in Thai style simple but fully equipped. The restaurant was decent as was the breakfast, it is such a shame that it is so quiet in this region they can use some support from tourism. Most people make a living from fishing, palm oil, and coconuts. If you're off the beaten track yet want to enjoy waterfalls, white beaches, good food, and friendly people Chumphon is the place o Be.
Krabi
From Chumphon, we drove three hours back to Krabi where we stayed in the Anana resort a new luxury resort with an eye for nature, so they try to minimize damage to focus on nature and they have a private garden with all kinds of vegetables and herbs they even have an electric longtail boat which is unique in Thailand and probably the future here. Krabi is booming in recent years we have visited this province about 8 years back when it was still relatively quiet and only visited by tourists from northern Europe. We stayed in Ao Nang where half was built on shops, hotels, and restaurants and this was also reflected on the beaches and tours with the longtail boats. Again we booked a private tour so we could catch the first boat to the islands before most tourists make some pictures. After 12 most beaches are very busy but still very beautiful. After we checked in at the resort we drove a bit back to walk to the viewpoint Dragon crest. An intensive walk but a great view, don't forget to bring enough water. More about Krabi
Pattaya
After the south of Thailand, we flew in an hour from Phuket to U Tapao airport near Pattaya. We visited family and drove to Pattaya where we stayed a few nights on the beach road of busy Pattaya. After this, we ended our holiday with a few days of rest on the beach of Najomtien where many nice restaurants and hotspots had been added over the years. A route through the south
A nice route is if you want to discover the south, you can book a flight to Phuket. You can stay in Phuket for a few nights. There is so much to do that you will not get bored. We decided to stay in some calm sandy Khao Lak from Khao Lak you can then tours to Khao Sok and from there you quickly in Chumphon, then you can drive back again to Phang Nga Bay and Krabi light here then again an hour from there you can end your trip in Phuket or you can fly from Phuket to Utapao to stay in the Pattaya area for a few days and possibly combine with Bangkok and fly back there.

Onze 3 weeks road trip door het zuiden van Thailand, Groene meren, witte stranden en adembenemende vergezichten
We starten onze trip met een vlucht vanaf Amsterdam via Istanbul naar Phuket, we vonden het altijd fijn om via Istanbul te vliegen omdat dit aanzienlijk goedkoper is als de andere vliegmaatschappijen waar je voor elke koffer moet bij betalen. Bij Turkish airlines zijn ze gelukkig niet zo moeilijk en de service zowel op de airport als in het vliegtuig zijn geweldig. Het was wel even wennen op het immens grote nieuwe vliegveld in Istanbul we waren hier nog nooit eerder geweest het is ook pas net open binnen zijn veel restaurantjes en winkels en doet me denken aan Dubai. Het oude vliegveld moest je al een stukje lopen met de overstap naar de andere terminal maar dit vliegveld is wel 4 keer zo groot en was dan ook wel een flinke wandeling naar de terminal.
Precies 1 Januari vliegen we ergens over het midden oosten en de piloot laat nog weten dat we in het nieuwe jaar invliegen waarna ik in slaap val en vlak voor Phuket weer wakker wordt als de zon door de ramen begint te schijnen en ik de geur van broodjes en koffie begin te ruiken. Geland in Phuket halen we onze huur auto op waarna we in 1,5 uur naar Khao Lak rijden waar we inchecken in het mooie resort The Haven Khao Lak.
We checkten in en kregen een kamer aan het zwembad op de benedenverdieping, je kon zo van je bed naar buiten het zwembad induiken een goed begin van het nieuwe jaar. Na een frisse duik doen we even een powernap en middags eten we in het restaurant van het hotel waar ik mijn eerste curry deze vakantie naar binnen werkte. In de namiddag besloten we content te maken met het idee van Kerst en Nieuwjaar op een wit strand misschien dat het verkoopt op stock fotografie websites je weet maar nooit ik probeer dit altijd op reis te combineren, eigenlijk moet je voor dit soort strand foto`s met drone het morgens vroeg doen omdat overdag het strand vol voetstappen staat waardoor het al gauw rommelig wordt van boven maar ja we hadden onze foto’s en een hoop lol.
Avonds schoven we aan bij het diner in buffet vorm met een uitgebreid BBQ de andere morgen pakten we na het ontbijt een paar fietsen aan de voorkant van het hotel en bezochten een tempel in de buurt, het was eerlijk fietsen over de rustige boeren weggetjes met aan beide kanten prachtige hoge palmbomen. Terug weg stopten we nog ergens langs de weg waar in de open lucht een paar bedjes stonden waar ze massage aanboden. We hebben ons hier een paar uur laten verwennen met een geweldig uitzicht op zee. Middags deden we lekker helemaal niets bij het hotel en genoten van een geweldige zonsondergang met een biertje in de hand aan het zwembad.
Khao Sok
De andere morgen checkten we uit en reden we na het ontbijt richting Khao Sok waar we onze auto parkeerden bij de CheLan pier waar ook de boot vertrok richting Panvaree resort. We kochten kaartje voor de entree in het nationale park en een parkeerkaartje en vertrokken naar Panvaree resort. Het was ongeveer een uurtje varen naar het resort en onderweg verveelden we ons geen minuut, de reizigers wie eerst enthousiast voorin waren gaan zitten verhuisden toch maar naar achteren omdat ze wel heel nat werden. Panvaree resort is een van de luxere resorts in Khao Sok meestal koop je een pakket inclusief ontbijt, lunch en dinner en activiteiten zoals een Sunrise, Sunset, hike in de jungle, kajakken enz.
We kregen een bungalow aangewezen ergens middenin, op 1 plateau staat een bungalow gedeeld met de buren, het kan soms wel gehorig zijn eventueel konden er op de boven verdieping ook nog kinderen slapen. Overdag is er geen stroom op de kamer dus zorg ervoor dat je alles oplaadt. Er is eventueel 1 stopcontact van de waaier beschikbaar voor je telefoon. De sfeer op het resort was gemoedelijk geen stress en het eten was lokaal Thais zonder te veel poespas en de smaak was goed en de hoeveelheid voldoende. We deden avonds een rondvaart in de longtail boot met andere gasten en de andere morgen een Sunrise en overdag relaxten we bij de bungalow en namen af en toen een duik in het kraakheldere water tussen de vissen of we pakten de kajak om wat rond te dobberen. Omdat we eigenlijk ook wel wat meer tijd nodig hadden om foto`s te maken huurden we een longtail boot voor ons alleen in de namiddag. De laatste ochtend lieten we ons ontbijt tegen een kleine vergoeding op onze kamer bezorgen waar we met een paradijslijk uitzicht van genoten. Rond 09:00 namen we de boot terug naar de pier, we hadden een paar geweldige dagen gehad in het midden van de Thaise jungle. Meer Khao Sok
Phangnga Bay
Vanaf Khao Sok reden we in 2 uurtjes naar Phangnga waar we verbleven bij het geweldige uitzicht punt Sametnagshe. Het uitzicht hier is onbetaalbaar we hadden een bamboe hutje in de bergen met uitzicht op tientallen eilandjes en de lagoon van Phanga Bay. Het resort is nog niet zo houdt en ze zijn nog steeds aan het bouwen, zo is er onlangs een zwembad toegevoegd en een nieuw restaurant met nog luxere bungalows je merkt aan alles dat het hier goed draait. Je kant het resort ook bezoeken alleen voor het uitzicht punt je parkeert dan beneden en voor een kleine vergoeding word je naar boven gereden waar je kan genieten van het restaurant en uitzichtpunt. Vanaf het resort is het 5 minuten rijden naar de haven waar we een lokale visserman charterden om ons rond te varen langs de vele eilandjes en Panyee village een dorp met zee gipsy’s gebouwd op palen nu doet het vooral dienst als een plek met veel restaurants er viel weinig meer te zien van het lokale leven van vroeger. We bezochten als eerste James Bond Island bekend om je raad het al een James bond film. We waren gelukkig vroeg en zo in staat om hier wat foto`s te maken, na ons kwamen er boten vol met toeristen uit Phuket welke allemaal dezelfde route volgen waardoor het op sommige plekken heel druk kan zijn het is dan ook beter om een tour te charteren bij een lokaal iemand zodat je niet in de massa toerisme stroom terecht komt. Dit proberen we meestal zo te regelen en vroeg in de morgen te vertrekken. Op Panyee eiland pinden we nog wat geld omdat er rond het resort in de buurt geen geld te pinnen valt. De volgende dag deden we niet veel en luierden wat bij het zwembad. Buiten het geweldige uitzicht en Phangnga Bay is er niet zoveel te beleven 3 nachten is dan ook meer als voldoende als je hier wil verblijven.
Chumpon
Omdat we nog familie in Chumphon hebben wonen besloten we ook deze provincie te bezoeken. Chumphon is een provincie welke normaal alleen bezocht wordt op doorreis naar de eiland Khao Sok, Phangnga en Koh Samui wat erg jammer is. Chumphon heeft kilometerslange witte zand stranden met palmbomen. Doordat het toerisme hier nog in de kinderstoelen staat of de meeste toeristen deze provincie helemaal overslaat zie je er en der wel wat plastic op de stranden het lijkt wel dat het hier nog niet doorgedrongen is dat plastic niet vanzelf verdwijnt van de stranden en de zee. We bezochten in Chumpon nog een lokaal visser dorpje waar je kan verblijven bij vissers families hier lag zoveel plastic op de stranden dat ik medelijden kreeg met een oude man die een poging deed alles te verzamelen op bulten om te verbranden, de smerige stranden bezaait met plastic maken hier een kans op toerisme kapot hier zou de overheid wat meer voorlichting mogen geven. We verbleven in Tusita Wellness resort een ruim opgezet resort met mooi zwembad en een professionele spa waar je alle soorten massages kan krijgen. De kamers zijn gebouwd in Thaise stijl eenvoudig maar van alle gemakken voorzien. Het restaurant was degelijk zoals ook het ontbijt, het is eigenlijk zo jammer dat het in deze regio zo rustig is ze kunnen wel wat support gebruiken van het toerisme. De meeste mensen leven van de visserij, palmolie en kokosnoten. Als je buiten de gebaande paden toch wil genieten van watervallen, witte stranden, lekker eten en vriendelijke bevolking is Chumphon te placet o Be. Meer Chumphon
Krabi
Vanaf Chumphon reden we in 3 uurtjes terug naar Krabi waar we verbleven in het Anana resort een nieuw luxe resort met hoog voor de natuur , zo proberen ze om zo weinig mogelijk schade aan te richten aan de natuur en hebben ze een eigen tuin met allerlei groente en kruiden ze hebben zelfs een elektrische longtail bot wat uniek in Thailand is en waarschijnlijk ook de toekomst hier is. Krabi is de laatste jaren booming we bezochten deze provincie een jaar of 8 terug toen het er nog relatief rustig was en alleen werd bezocht door toeristen uit noord Europa. We verbleven in Ao Nang waar wel de helft was bijgebouwd aan winkels, hotels en restaurants en dit zag je ook terug op de stranden en tours met de longtail boten. Ook hier boekten we een privé tour zodat we de eerste boot konden pakken richting de eilanden om zo net voor de meeste toeristen nog wat foto`s te kunnen maken. Na 12 zijn de meeste stranden erg druk maar nog steeds bijzonder mooi. Nadat we ingecheckt waren reden we een stukje terug om naar het uitzichtpunt Dragon crest te wandelen. Pattaya
Na het Zuiden van Thailand vlogen we in een uurtje vanaf Phuket naar U Tapao airport dichtbij Pattaya. We brachten een bezoek bij familie en reden door naar Pattaya waar we een paar nachten verbleven aan de beach road van het drukke Pattaya. Hierna sloten we onze vakantie af met een paar dagen rust aan het strand van Najomtien waar heel veel leuke restaurantjes en hotspots waren bijgekomen in de jaren. Vanaf Pattaya ben je over de nieuwe snelweg in 1,5 uur in Bangkok waar we terug vlogen naar Amsterdam. Our stay in Pattaya
Route door het zuiden
Een mooie route is als je het zuiden wil ontdekken is een vlucht naar Phuket te boeken eventueel kan je een paar nachten in Phuket verblijven hier is zoveel te doen dat je niet snel verveeld zal raken. Wij besloten om te verblijven in het wat rusterige Khao Lak vanaf Khao Lak kan je dan door reisen naar Khao Sok en vanaf daar ben je ook snel in Chumphon, hierna kan je weer terug rijden naar Phangnga Bay en Krabi licht hier dan ook weer een uurtje vandaan je kan je reis eindigen in Phuket of je kan vanaf Phuket naar Utapao vliegen om in de omgeving Pattaya daar nog een paar dagen te verblijven en eventueel combineren met Bangkok en vandaar terug te vliegen.
