Rovinj the little Venice of Croatia
Rovinj Croatia is a beautiful town in Istria Croatia. The old town is situated by the sea, on a hilly peninsula, with the tower of St. Euphemia Church marking its highest point. Rovinj is considered one of the most photogenic places in Croatia. If you only visit one place in Croatia, this should be it. There are so much atmosphere and character in this town, and I promise: there’s plenty of things to do in Rovinj
Rovinj was once part of the Venetian Republic (from 1283 to 1797) until Napoleon Bonaparte arrived and put an end to the millennium of Venetian power in the Adriatic and beyond. When you walk around town, you’ll spot the Venetian lions everywhere, like on the Balbi Arch, the late-Renaissance clock tower and the wells.
Its colorful houses are rising from the sea. Rovinj's steep pedestrian streets are full of art galleries, bars, and restaurants. Town's harbor is busy with small pleasure and fishing boats. There are places you simply need to see in your life, and for me, Rovinj is one of those places. The only way to really understand it is to experience it. The old town evokes nostalgia, and it's absolutely romantic. You'll have lots of photo moments while exploring it.
Rovinj is one of those towns where you never feel bored. Its beauty is just so inspiring, it makes you feel good just to walk its narrow cobbled streets up and down and enjoy the sunset on the many terraces around the harbor.
When to visit:
The best time to visit Rovinj is spring, fall, early and late summer. Rovinj is beautiful at any time of the year but winters could be pretty rainy, cold and lacking any activity. Summer is hot, busy and crowded. For me, the perfect time to visit is in September. There are far fewer people, the sea is still warm, accommodation prices are more affordable.
Beaches:
Rovinj has many wonderful rocky, and pebbly beaches; going south from the famed Lone Bay beach, through beaches of Golden Cape forest, across Punta Eva, all the way to neighboring Bale, you can enjoy many lovely beaches. Lovely seafront promenade stretches south of the old town, from the hotel Park, along the Lone Bay, to the Punta Corrente forest park. Here you'll find three beaches: town beach, Mulini beach Club, and Long Beach. The last two are open to the public (like all beaches in Croatia), but deck chairs are reserved for hotel guests, while the general public have to pay to use them.
Old town:
Rovinj's most popular street, La Grisia is hard to miss. The widest of all cobbled streets leading up to the church of St. Euphemia, La Grisia is full of art, jewelry, and souvenir shops, as well as a couple of restaurants. Rovinj's old town is a little gem waiting to be explored. It's located on a small, hilly peninsula, full of narrow cobbled streets, Venetian-style houses, interesting courtyards, art galleries, cozy restaurants, and buzzing bars.

By Plane
The closest airport to Rovinj is Pula Airport. A small, seasonal airport, serves as a gateway to Istria during tourist season (May to October). A couple of low-cost airlines connects Pula with a handful of European destinations. You can also fly into Krk, Trieste, Treviso, Venice, Ljubljana and Zagreb airports. They are all up to three hours drive from Rovinj. From there you can either take a bus or rent a car.
By Car
Traveling by car is by far the most convenient way to reach Istria. Roads in Istria are excellent. Istrian motorway, called Istrian Ypsilon (it’s shaped like a letter Y), is a modern and fast road, connecting Istria with a Slovenian border, and also with Rijeka to the southeast.
By Boat
Venezia lines operate a hydro boat between Venice and Rovinj, from the end of April until the beginning of October. Starting in May, the boat departs three times a week, and in July and August, daily except on Wednesday.
Transport in Rovinj
Rovinj is a small town that can easily be explored on foot. The old town, located on a small peninsula is a car-free zone. If you decide to stay in old town, double check with a front office if they provide parking at the nearby parking lots, and a free transfer to the hotel. Old town hotels usually help you reach a hotel with their golf carts.
Holiday resorts, located north and south of the old town, like Amarin or Villas Rubin, offer for an extra charge, shuttle buses, and boat line to and from the old town. Boats connect St. Catherine and Red Island with the old town. They depart hourly throughout the day.
If you stay outside the old town, you can also reach it by bicycle. Rovinj is mostly flat and easy to navigate by bicycle. However, once you reach the old town, you'll need to park your bike, as the old town can't be explored by bicycle due to its location on a hilly peninsula full of stairs.
Car Parking:
Rovinj's old town is a car-free place, only accessible by foot. Rovinj has two designated parking lots close to the old town, and street parking as well. North of the old town, you'll find Valdibora, the largest parking lot in Rovinj. It's also the closest parking to the old town.

Rovinj Kroatië is een prachtige stad in Istrië, Kroatië. De oude stad ligt aan zee, op een heuvelachtig schiereiland, met de toren van de St. Euphemia kerk als hoogtepunt. Rovinj wordt beschouwd als een van de meest fotogenieke plekken in Kroatië. Als u slechts één plaats in Kroatië bezoekt, zou het Rovinj moeten zijn. Er hangt zoveel sfeer en karakter in deze stad, en ik beloof u er is genoeg te doen in Rovinj en er omheen.

Er zijn plaatsen die je gewoon in je leven moet zien, en voor mij is Rovinj een van die plaatsen. De enige manier om het echt te begrijpen, is door het te ervaren en de sfeer te proeven. De oude stad roept nostalgie op en het is absoluut romantisch.
Je zult hier vele fotomomenten hebben tijdens het verkennen en rond dwalen.Rovinj is een van die steden waar je je nooit zult vervelen. De schoonheid is net zo inspirerend, het geeft je een goed gevoel alleen maar om de smalle geplaveide straatjes op en neer te lopen en te genieten van de zonsondergang op de vele terrassen rondom de haven.
Wanneer te bezoeken:
De beste tijd om Rovinj te bezoeken is in de lente, herfst, vroege en late zomer. Rovinj is op elk moment van het jaar mooi, maar de winters kunnen behoorlijk regenachtig en koud zijn en er zijn geen activiteiten. De zomer is heet, druk en toeristisch. Voor mij is de perfecte tijd om te bezoeken in september. Er zijn veel minder mensen, de zee is nog steeds warm, accommodatieprijzen zijn betaalbaarder.
Stranden:
Rovinj heeft veel prachtige rotsachtige kiezelstranden; naar het zuiden vanaf het beroemde Lone Bay-strand, via de stranden van het Gouden Kaap-bos, over Punta Eva, helemaal naar de naburige Bale, kunt u genieten van de vele prachtige stranden. Mooie promenade langs de zee strekt zich uit ten zuiden van de oude stad, van het hotelpark, langs de Lone-baai, tot het bospark Punta Corrente. Hier vind je drie stranden: stadsstrand, Mulini beach Club en Long Beach. De laatste twee zijn open voor het publiek (zoals alle stranden in Kroatië), maar ligstoelen zijn gereserveerd voor hotelgasten, terwijl het grote publiek betaalt om ze te gebruiken.
Oude stad:
De populairste straat van Rovinj, La Grisia, is moeilijk te missen. De breedste van alle geplaveide straatjes die naar de kerk van St. Euphemia leiden, is vol met kunst, sieraden en souvenirwinkels, evenals een aantal restaurants. Het oude centrum van Rovinj is een klein juweeltje dat wacht om ontdekt te worden. Het is gelegen op een klein, heuvelachtig schiereiland, vol met smalle geplaveide straatjes, huizen in Venetiaanse stijl, interessante binnenplaatsen, kunstgalerijen, gezellige restaurants en bruisende bars.
Hoe te bereiken:
Met het vliegtuig
Het dichtstbijzijnde vliegveld naar Rovinj is Pula Airport. Een klein, seizoensgebonden vliegveld, dient als toegangspoort tot Istrië tijdens het toeristenseizoen (van mei tot oktober). Een paar goedkope luchtvaartmaatschappijen verbinden Pula met een handvol Europese bestemmingen. Je kunt ook vliegen naar de luchthavens van Krk, Triëst, Treviso, Venetië, Ljubljana en Zagreb. Ze zijn allemaal maximaal drie uur rijden van Rovinj. Vanaf daar kunt u een bus nemen of een auto huren.
Met de auto
Reizen met de auto is veruit de handigste manier om Istrië te bereiken. Wegen in Istrië zijn uitstekend. De Istrische snelweg, genaamd Istrian Ypsilon (het heeft de vorm van een letter Y), is een moderne en snelle weg, die Istrië verbindt met een Sloveense grens, en ook met Rijeka naar het zuidoosten.
Per boot
Venezia-lijnen exploiteren een hydro-boot tussen Venetië en Rovinj, van eind april tot begin oktober. Vanaf mei vertrekt de boot driemaal per week en in juli en augustus dagelijks, behalve op woensdag.
Vervoer in Rovinj
Rovinj is een klein stadje dat gemakkelijk te voet verkend kan worden. De oude stad, gelegen op een klein schiereiland, is een autovrije zone. Als u besluit om in de oude stad te verblijven, controleer dan bij een receptie of ze parkeren op de nabijgelegen parkeerplaatsen en een gratis pendeldienst naar het hotel. Oude stadshotels helpen je meestal om een hotel te bereiken met hun golfkarretje. Vakantieressorts, gelegen ten noorden en ten zuiden van de oude stad, zoals Amarin of Villas Rubin, bieden tegen een meerprijs shuttlebussen en bootverbindingen van en naar het oude centrum. Boten verbinden St. Catherine en Red Island met de oude stad. Ze vertrekken elk uur gedurende de dag. Als u buiten de oude stad blijft, kunt u deze ook per fiets bereiken. Rovinj is meestal vlak en gemakkelijk te navigeren per fiets. Als u echter eenmaal in de oude stad bent, moet u uw fiets parkeren, omdat de oude stad niet per fiets kan worden verkend vanwege de ligging op een heuvelachtig schiereiland met trappen.
Parkeren
Het oude centrum van Rovinj is een autovrije plaats, alleen te voet bereikbaar. Rovinj heeft twee aangewezen parkeerterreinen dicht bij de oude stad en ook parkeren op straat. Ten noorden van de oude stad vind je Valdibora
